A self accomplished artist never having formal
training, Gail Griffiths relies on her God given talent passed down by her
Mom and Dad. Her mom a talented painter ,portrait artist and cartoonist, her
dad a man of many talents who shines in his field as a rose horticulturist.
At age 10 Gail began drawing faces from magazine covers, the first of which
were the Beatles upon their arrival to the U.S.
In Junior High School she began oil painting and her first painting was a
triple portrait of the cast of the T.V. show the "Mod Squad". It was honored
by being hung in the lobby of the high school entry way.
Gail's Brother is a self taught photographer who made a makeshift
darkroom in the corner of the basement in the family home. She loved
watching him develope the photos of the people and places he photographed in
his daily life and taught her as he learned. Together their love for
photography grew.
Loving photography, drawing and painting, Gail incorporates all three
mediums in her art today. Her photography is done with two old 1940 - 1970
35mm SLR (single lens reflex) cameras, using only natural light, never a
flash. She feels there is such beauty in capturing an image in natural light
. She has progressed to doing some photography with a digital 5.1 megapixel
Nikon camera and even then turns off the flash to ensure the photo have a
pure and natural feel.
Gail's painting's are taken to the basic level also. Most portraits are
done in monochromatic color (one tone), preferably sienna or umber browns.
When doing other paintings, whether they be from a photograph she has taken
or from an image and theme she has imagined the only colors the artist uses
are red, yellow, blue, brown and white. "I like purity in my art,
simplicity and the greater ability to create color variations from basics,
it's fun".
Presently Gail has a line of Photo Cards and note cards available in local
gift shops. Her artwork is shown in local galleries, art shows and
professional offices.
Among her credits she has won the Fourteenth Annual Jean Townsend Award
at the Art Alliance in Red Bank, New Jersey, USA. and had a piece selected
to travel with the prestigious Bueller's Photo Expo, Paramus, New Jersey,
